Pennoyer Centre

This multi function and award winning community building has a cafe, with enthusiastic staff and lots of homemade cakes. They tried to persuade me to have a full English breakfast, but for the sake of my arteries I settled for a capuccino.

Go upstairs to find out about the Pulham Pigs.

A Hearty breakfast

Had to spend the day at Papworth hospital this week (not as a patient) but long enough to try their breakfast of deep fried sausage, deep fried bread, deep fried mushrooms, black pudding and bacon. But I did have tomatoes and it was only £3.49 for six items.

Shake up your Wake up

Shake up your wake up because this week is Farmhouse Breakfast week. This morning I made buckwheat pancakes filled with delicious locally cured bacon and a poached free range egg. It also happens to be gluten free!

A Boundary - but not in the cricketing sense

Well while we are in London we might as well go out for breakfast too...so here we are at Albion, the cafe at Boundary - Terence Conran - for a full English and kidneys on toast. It was listed as £ rather than £££ in our guide but at £8.50 for kidneys (just kidneys, no sauce, on dry toast) it soon adds up. But couldn't fault the ingredients and we were asked if we prefer streaky or back bacon which is a nice touch as I always prefer streaky, given the choice. Apart from thinking the waiter was going to ask us for a pound to get a hot drink (strange uniforms...) it was a nice start to the day.

Granola

Granola - a toasted muesli, nice with fresh fruit and yoghurt for a vegetarian breakfast, this is a very adaptable recipe using any grains, seeds and nuts that you fancy.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz / 300g rolled oats, wheat flakes, rolled barley or any other rolled grains
  • 4oz / 100g chopped hazelnuts, pecans, almonds or any other nuts
  • 2oz/50g pumpkin, flax, sunflower seeds or seeds of your choice
  • 2oz/50g desiccated coconut
  • 4 fl oz Hill Farm rapeseed oil or sunflower oil
  • 4 fl oz Suffolk honey
  • 6oz/150g raisins or sultanas

Method

Preheat the oven to 130c/Gas 2 ( a cool setting)

Place the rolled oats in a bowl and mix in the nuts, seeds and coconut.  ( not the raisins yet!) Stir well.

Warm the honey and oil together in a small pan and pour onto the dry mixture.

Coat all the nuts, oats, seeds etc in the honey and oil.

Spread the mixture onto a baking tin and place in the oven for 40 mins.  You will need to move the granola around a little from time to time to ensure that it crisps all over.

Remove from the oven and mix in the raisins.  Leave to cool and store in an airtight container. where it will keep for several weeks.
